The frog from Riga and the frog from Liepaja
Once upon a time there lived two frogs. One lived in Riga and the other in Liepaja. One of them dreamt about seeing how the life in Riga was and the other thought that it would be very nice to see how the life in Liepaja looked.
The frog from Liepaja went on and on, till it got on the top of a hill and saw the other frog jumping to her from the opposite side – from Riga.
“And where are you going?” asked the frog from Liepaja.
“I am going to see Liepaja, ” said the frog from Riga.
“Well, I am on the way to Riga,” said the frog from Liepaja.
So they had a talk about a long way they had had to go and a lot of dangers, especially storks, they had suffered of.
“Wait a minute,” said one of them. “What would you say if we stood up on the top of the hill and had a look at the two towns, so that we would not have to go such a long distance there?” No sooner said than done. The both frogs stood up against each other. And what did they see?
The frog from Riga said: ”Hark, sister, your Liepaja looks just like my Riga!”
And the frog from Liepaja said, “Riga is similar to Liepaja. The two cities are as alike as two peas in a pod. “
“If that is the way things are in the world, then it is no use to continue in our journey,” said the both frogs.
However, they forgot that when they stood up on their back legs, their eyes looked backwards not forwards.
And so the two poor frogs have not known yet that Riga is by no means similar to Liepaja.
